There may well be N-Ge-N π-interactions that would take the EN to 8 but this was not discussed in the communication. Subsequently the full paper includes ""but because the planarity is retained in the bis(tetramethyl- piperidinato) complexes, some degree of π-bonding between nitrogen and Ge ... may be implicated; planar geometries at N in metal amides are the rule rather than the exception" - this is taken into account through an extra L interaction.
