5g radial distribution function

Schematic plot of the 5g radial distribution function r2R5g2 (R5g = radial wave function).

Schematic plot of the 5g orbitals radial distribution function.

For 5g-orbitals, the radial distribution function is related to the product obtained by multiplying the square of the radial wave function R5g by r2. By definition, it is independent of direction.

In addition to planar and conical nodes, g-orbitals (n > 5) display a number of radial nodes that separate the largest, outer, component from the inner components. The number of nodes is related to the principal quantum number, n. In general, the ng orbital has (n - 5) radial nodes, so the 5g-orbitals have (5 - 5) = 0 radial nodes, as shown in the above plot. Radial nodes do become evident, however, in the higher g-orbitals ( 6g and 7g).
