Atomic orbitals: 5f electron densityThis page addresses the 5fx3, 5fy3, and 5fz3 electron density functions. The last of these (5fz3) is common to both the general and cubic 5f orbital sets. The other two are not in the general set. See below for links to images of the electron densities of the other 5f orbitals. "Dot-density" plot of the 5fx(5x2-3r2) (abbreviated as 5fx3) electron density function ψ5fx(5x2-3r2) (or ψ5fx3). Blue represents negative values for the wave function and red represents positive values. This page displays the electron density of the 5fx3 orbital as a "dot-density" diagram. High density of dots in a region denotes high electron density. The 5fx3, 5fy3, and 5fz3 are identical in appearance and differ only in direction. This is best seen when viewing all three together. Using JmolYou can use your mouse to manipulate the "orbital" in the "Jmol" image above.
