Chime

Chime is a plug-in software designed by MDL and is available at no charge from their site. It can be used in parallel with the Netscape browser to display molecules in 3D (Netscape version 3.0 or above recommended).

Controls

  • Bring up the display options by clicking the right mouse button on the molecule.
  • Rotate molecule by holding the left mouse button and moving the mouse.
  • Zoom in/out by moving the mouse up/down while holding down 'shift' and the left mouse button.
  • Position the molecule by moving the mouse while holding down 'ctrl' and the right mouse button.

Chime 2

Chime 2 is the latest version of this plug-in and is free for educational use. In addition to extra features such as shadows and 2D/3D options, it is also capable of displaying and manipulating spectroscopic data.

Extra controls

  • Bring up options menu of spectroscopic display by clicking the right mouse button.
  • Zoom into the spectra by dragging an area with the left mouse button.
  • Click on the peaks with the left mouse button to highlight the atom(s) responsible.

Notes

At the time of writing, Chime 2 is being tested and is only available for the PC running Windows 95 and Netscape 4.01.

The spectral viewer was designed by Dr. Robert Lancashire and was originally intended for displaying IR spectra. There are a couple of drawbacks when displaying NMR spectra which may be addressed in the final released version.

  • The units are in Hz not ppm.
  • As default, spectra are displayed from left to right. To view in the correct orientation select 'Reverse plot' from the options menu.
